Our Philosophy
Great Jiu Jitsu Should Develop More Than Technique
At Horizon, we believe Brazilian Jiu Jitsu should challenge you, support you, and help you grow both on and off the mat.
Our goal is to provide high-level, authentic Jiu Jitsu instruction in an environment where kids and adults can build skill, confidence, discipline, resilience, and a lasting love for training.
Built Around the Kind of Academy We Believe In
After decades spent training, competing, and teaching Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Professors Fabio Coelho and Mathaus Moreira created Horizon around a simple idea: students should never have to choose between high-level instruction and a welcoming place to learn.
Horizon brings together the technical standards and traditions that shaped them as practitioners with an environment designed to help students of every age and experience level feel supported, challenged, and motivated to improve.
The goal isn’t simply to teach techniques. It’s to create a place where people can continue growing for years.
Strong Fundamentals. Lasting Progress.
Learn Jiu Jitsu the Right Way
Progress starts with understanding the fundamentals.
Our professors emphasize precise technique, positioning, timing, problem-solving, and understanding why something works, not simply memorizing a series of movements.
Students build skills step by step, creating a foundation they can continue developing whether they are taking their first class or have trained for years.
Growth Beyond the Mat
What You Learn in Jiu Jitsu Carries With You
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu constantly presents problems to solve, challenges to overcome, and opportunities to improve.
Over time, training can help students develop:
Confidence through genuine skill and accomplishment
Discipline through consistency and focused practice
Resilience by learning to work through difficulty and setbacks
Respect for training partners, instructors, and themselves
Focus by staying present and working toward long-term goals
Humility through continually learning, adapting, and improving
For children, those lessons can carry into school, sports, and everyday life. For adults, they can provide challenge, structure, perspective, and continued personal growth.
High Standards Without the Intimidation
Everyone Should Feel Like They Belong on the Mat
Jiu Jitsu is challenging. Walking into an academy for the first time shouldn’t have to be.
Horizon is committed to creating a safe, respectful, and welcoming environment where beginners can ask questions, experienced students can continue pushing themselves, and every student is treated as an important part of the academy.
We believe students learn best when they are challenged without being discouraged and supported without lowering expectations.
That means serious training without an unnecessarily intimidating culture.
A Community Built to Grow Together
Your Training Partners Are Part of Your Progress
No one learns Jiu Jitsu alone.
Every class depends on students helping one another practice, solve problems, and improve. That makes respect, trust, and responsibility to your training partners an essential part of the experience.
At Horizon, we want to build a community where students celebrate each other’s progress, experienced practitioners help newer students develop, and families feel comfortable making the academy part of their lives.
Jiu Jitsu for the Long Term
A Practice You Can Keep Growing With
There is always another technique to understand, problem to solve, or part of yourself to improve.
That is one of the things that makes Brazilian Jiu Jitsu unique.
Whether someone begins at four years old or forty, competes or never enters a tournament, Jiu Jitsu can continue providing new challenges and opportunities for growth for years to come.
Our goal is not simply to get students through their first few classes.
We want to help them build a relationship with Jiu Jitsu that lasts.
